Ingredients for Cobb Salad
To easily remember the components of a Cobb salad, one can use the acronym E.A.T. C.O.B.B., where each letter represents an ingredient: Eggs, Avocado, Tomato, Chicken, Onion, Bacon, and Blue Cheese. This is a straightforward mnemonic to aid in memory retention.
Romaine – Dark green, crunchy, and crinkly Romaine lettuce is an ideal choice as it can hold all the dressing. Alternatively, Butter lettuce or iceberg lettuce can also be great options.
Chicken – When it comes to a Cobb salad , the chicken can be served either warm or chilled, but personally, I prefer it to be hot. To serve the dish described, I cook the chicken in a frying pan and then slice it.
This recipe allows for flexibility in the choice of chicken. To prepare your cobb salad in advance, you have the option of grilling and slicing chicken breasts or using shredded rotisserie or roasted chicken. It’s important to mention that you can use almost any type of chicken, such as breaded chicken strips, and still achieve the desired outcome with this recipe.
Cheese – For this salad, crumbly cheeses like blue cheese (or feta if you don’t prefer blue cheese) are a great choice. In the absence of blue or feta cheese, shredded cheddar cheese can be a good alternative.
Other Additions – This cobb salad recipe
is completed with avocados, tomatoes, and onions, but you are welcome to incorporate any fresh vegetables that you have available, or even leftovers! Hard-boiled eggs, which can be easily prepared in the air fryer, are also recommended.

My Best Tips
- For a refreshing salad, utilize dressing that has been chilled.
- Thoroughly wash the chopped lettuce leaves, and then pass them through a salad spinner to ensure they are properly dried, allowing the dressing to cling to the lettuce.
- For optimal freshness, it’s advisable to add the dressing to the lettuce at the time of serving to avoid wilting.
- For best results in preventing browning, it’s suggested that you refrain from chopping the avocado until just before serving.
- If you want to reduce the harshness of red onion, chop it first and then rinse it under water before draining it.

Questions and answers about this recipe
Recipe variations
My family’s preference is for the homemade cobb salad ranch over the vinaigrette, even though the latter is more traditional. As far as my own preferences go, I find both dressings enjoyable, therefore, you can select the one that suits your taste without any hesitation.
Substitute a couple of handfuls of romaine lettuce with watercress.
Choose one or two tablespoons of minced chives as a substitute for red onion.
Substitute blue cheese with cheddar cheese. Roquefort or feta are also excellent alternatives.
You have the option to boil eggs in water instead of steaming them, if you so choose.
For a subtle crunch, consider adding nuts such as pecans, walnuts, or slivered almonds, or even sunflower seeds.
Finish by adding croutons.
What Do You Serve with cobb salads?
If you’re looking for a main course that’s packed with vegetables, protein, and even some fruit in the form of tomatoes, Cobb salads are a great option. To make it a complete and well-rounded dinner, you can pair it with a light soup, or alternatively, serve it with some crusty bread and a refreshing summer drink.

Can You Freeze cobb lettuce?
Freezing your lettuce is worth considering if you want to further extend its shelf life. It may be surprising, but cobb lettuce can indeed be frozen!
For optimal results, it is advisable to freeze denser types of lettuce, such as romaine or butterhead. It’s important to note that frozen lettuce usually loses some of its crispness and taste, therefore it’s preferable to freeze lettuce for smoothies, soups, and stews rather than using it in dishes that require fresh lettuce leaves, like salads. This advice also applies to other types of leafy greens, such as spinach and kale, which can also be successfully frozen.
Can You Store Cobb Salad?
If possible, it’s advisable to store any leftover cobb salad separately from the dressing. Prior to serving, mix the salad and dressing together or incorporate fresh lettuce, cheese, bacon, or tomatoes to revive the salad.
You can store the dressing in a jar with a well-fitting lid for a maximum of 1 week.
What is the Best Cobb Salad Dressing?
The customary dressing for a cobb salad is a red wine vinaigrette, which is the dressing I’ll be using today. It has a light and refreshing taste! As this salad is quite substantial, cream-based dressings like ranch can be overly thick and heavy, so it’s best to avoid them.

Cobb Salad
Ingredients
- 6 slices bacon
- 2 ripe avocados, seed removed, peeled, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
- ½ head Boston lettuce
- ½ head romaine
- 2 hard-boiled large eggs, separated, the yolk finely chopped and the white finely chopped
- ⅓ cup red wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Dijon-style mustard
- ½ bunch watercress, coarse stems discarded
- 1 tomato, seeded and chopped fine
- 1 teaspoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
- Salt and pepper
- 1 whole skinless boneless chicken breast (about 3/4 pound total), halved, cooked, and diced
- ⅔ cup extra virgin olive oil
- ½ cup finely grated Roquefort
- 1 small bunch frisée (curly endive)
Instructions
Cook the bacon:
- To make the bacon crispy on both sides, cook it in a skillet over medium heat. Then, take it out of the skillet and place it on top of some paper towels to soak up any excess fat. Let the bacon cool down before breaking it into small pieces and keeping it aside.
Toss the various lettuces:
- Take a big salad bowl and mix the different types of lettuce and watercress thoroughly by tossing them together.
Compose the salad:
- Artfully place the chicken, bacon, tomato, and avocado over the bed of greens and embellish the salad with chopped egg and chives as a garnish.
Make the vinaigrette:
- Take a small bowl and then mix vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper to taste. While whisking, slowly add the oil and continue to whisk until the sauce is completely emulsified.
- Incorporate the Roquefort cheese into the mixture. Adjust the sweetness to your liking, adding 1/2 teaspoon of sugar at a time. Blend the dressing vigorously, then either mix it in with the salad or serve it on the side.
